Across the state, there are a variety of music festivals that satisfy any taste. Whether you’re a blues fan or a rock lover, partaking in some live tunes during the Illinois summer is the perfect way to spend a weekend.

American Music Festival (July 3–6)

Berwyn

FitzGerald's Nightclub in Berwyn is renowned for its live music performances, but the highlight every year is surely the American Music Festival. This four-day festival always features an impressive lineup of roots performers, this year numbering more than 50. 2024 headliners include Nikki Lane, Sierra Hull, The Jayhawks, and Old 97’s, performing across multiple stages in a setting that nonetheless maintains an intimate vibe. Accommodation options include Carleton of Oak Park and Write Inn Hotel.

Rose on the River (July 4–7)

Chicago

Most Illinois summer music festivals have been going for years. But here's a chance to say you were there the year it began. Rose on the River at The Salt Shed Fairgrounds promises to be a future classic, bringing a stellar lineup to an intimate setting that puts the spotlight firmly on the music. The inaugural headliners include My Morning Jacket, Tash Sultana, Thundercat, and Vulfpeck, and with no overlapping set times, you'll be able to catch them all. Windy City Smokeout (July 11–14)

Windy City Smokeout at the United Center is a perfect blend of country music, BBQ, and craft beer. The 2024 lineup features country stars like Thomas Rhett, Parker McCollum, Cody Johnson, and Carrie Underwood, performing across four days. Miche Fest (July 13–14)

Chicago

Join the celebration at Miche Fest 2024, taking place July 13–14 at Oakwood Beach. Dubbed "Chicago's Latino Festival," this event brings together the best of Latin music, food, and culture. The 2024 lineup features artists across genres like reggaeton, cumbia, and regional Mexican music. Along with electrifying performances, you can enjoy refreshing micheladas and authentic Latin American cuisine, all in the perfect summer atmosphere right beside the beach. Pitchfork Music Festival (July 19–21)

Pitchfork Music Festival returns to Union Park in Chicago from July 19–21, featuring a can’t-miss lineup including Alanis Morissette, Black Pumas, and Jamie xx. This independently run festival attracts more than 60,000 attendees from all across the country. Going beyond the music, Pitchfork boasts 50 vendors, specialty retail fairs, and even a Kids’ Zone for little ones to take a break from the loud stages. There are plenty of convenient hotels close to the park, such as Hotel Chicago West Loop, The Hoxton, and Ace Hotel, so you can walk to the festival at your leisure.

Lollapalooza (August 1–4)

Chicago’s biggest music festival, Lollapalooza, returns to Grant Park from August 1–4, 2024. This year's star-studded lineup includes headliners like SZA, Megan Thee Stallion, Blink-182, The Killers, Future x Metro Boomin, Hozier, Stray Kids, Melanie Martinez, and Skrillex. Since 1991, Lollapalooza isn’t just a music festival - it’s an experience. Chicago’s delectable cuisine is at the ready in Chow Town, with past years featuring Chicago’s favorite restaurants like Billy Goat Tavern, Broken English Taco Pub, Harold’s Chicken, and Lou Malnati's Pizza. Bands Brews & BBQ (August 16–18)

McHenry

The 13th annual Bands, Brews & BBQ will feature an all-star cast of talent, from the John Todd Band — a perennial favorite opening act — to final notes from Wildwood Country. Add to that an impressive array of craft beers and sweet, tangy barbecue — all against a beautiful lakeshore backdrop — and you’ve got the recipe for fun! The Hampton Inn in town makes for a great home base.

Peoria Blues & Heritage Music Festival (August 30–31)

Peoria

Now in its 44th year, the Peoria Blues & Heritage Music Festival returns once more to celebrate the soulful sounds of blues, roots, funk, and soul. Against the picturesque backdrop of the Illinois River, you'll enjoy performances from top artists in the genres, including local legends and national acts. Food and merch vendors await too, and the bars and restaurants of downtown Peoria are just a wander away. There's plenty of accommodation nearby, too, including Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette and Embassy Suites by Hilton East Peoria Riverfront Hotel.

Riot Fest (September 20–22)

Bridgeview

Founded in 2005, Riot Fest is a multi-day music festival specializing in punk, rock, alternative, metal, and hip-hop. Carnival rides, amazing food vendors, sideshow performers, and more add to the atmosphere of this independent music fest. Now held at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, this year's stacked lineup features Fall Out Boy, Beck, Slayer, The Offspring, NOFX, Pavement, and St. Vincent. Stay nearby at the DoubleTree by Hilton Chicago Midway Airport or the Courtyard by Marriott Chicago Midway Airport.

Little Grassy Get Down (October 11–13)

Makanda

Want to stretch summer just that little bit further? Get down to Makanda for the Little Grassy Get Down at the SIU Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center, where the summer spirit will still be in full swing. This family-friendly festival features a stellar lineup of acoustic Americana music from around the Midwest, including acts like Woodbox Gang, Chain Station, and Chicago Farmer. Enjoy music across three days, along with food, local vendors, hiking, and biking trails amidst the beautiful Shawnee Forest. Lodging options include tent camping, car camping, and various on-site accommodations including Little Grassy Lodge at Touch of Nature, with RV spots available nearby at Little Grassy Campground.
